One journalist's account of a 35-year journey through the provincial newspaper industry. Working at no less than 14 weekly and daily titles during an intriguing if nomadic first quarter-of-a-century in which relationships, office politics and accommodation issues were often as significant as ability and ambition, he witnessed typewriters and typesetters being superseded by computers and emails among the many changes. Then came a decade of decline with the advent of free websites and the social media resulting in plummeting circulation figures across the board and the closure of many titles.
