We find this fundamental innovation in Johannes Hispalensis and Jordanus Nemorarius at the end of the XIIth century, and, later, in some other mathematicians like Regiomontanus (see below). However, this notation was not followed by the mathematicians of Middle-Ages and Renaissance who have the greatest difficulties in handling formal equations.
