DAVID GOODMAN is professor of history at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He is the author of Gold Seeking: Victoria and California in the 1850s and Radio's Civic Ambition: American Broadcasting and Democracy in the 1930s. JOY ELIZABETH HAYES is associate professor of communication studies at the University of Iowa, Iowa City.
