Hepatology refers to the branch of medicine that studies and manages disorders of the gallbladder, pancreas, liver and biliary tree. It was previously considered as a subspecialty of gastroenterology, but it is now becoming recognized as a separate field of study. Clinical research in hepatology is focused on developing novel medications, such as improvements to well-established liver transplantation procedures, antiviral medicines and developing new strategies for sustenance of failing liver.
