TONY FITZPATRICK is Reader in Social and Political Theory at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is the author of Freedom and Security, Welfare Theory, After the New Social Democracy and co-editor of Environmental Issues and Social Welfare, Environment and Welfare. He is also the principal editor of the forthcoming International Encyclopaedia of Social Policy.
