Although the NFL had begun permitting such "underclassmen" to place their name into the draft as early as 1989, within a few years it was clear that many of them had been deluded by commission-based sports agents as to the likely demand by teams and the actual negotiated salaries to be arrived at. Once a college football player has entered the draft, he is no longer eligible to play college football. Thus, it was important that such players have a good grasp of whether they would be among the small number of players drafted and what the payment might be, before committing to the process.
