Nicola Ferguson Sturgeon (born July 19, 1970) is a Scottish politician renowned for her influential role in Scottish politics as the First Minister of Scotland and Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) from 2014 to 2023. She has been a prominent figure in the Scottish Parliament (MSP) since its inception in 1999, representing the Glasgow electoral region as an additional member before being elected as the member for Glasgow Southside (formerly Glasgow Govan) in 2007. Sturgeon was born in Ayrshire and graduated in law from the University of Glasgow, later working as a solicitor in Glasgow before beginning her political career. Entering the Scottish Parliament as a founding MSP in 1999, she quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the SNP's shadow minister for education, health, and justice. She entered the SNP leadership race in 2004 but withdrew in favor of Alex Salmond, instead running as his deputy in a joint ticket. Following Salmond's election as leader, Sturgeon served as Leader of the Opposition in the Scottish Parliament from 2004 to 2007.
