Successful government in Nigeria ever since the 1970s have adopted various measures to curb the menace of poverty in the country but to no avail; . This persistence has been observed that no meaningful contribution would be made in reducing poverty in the country without a thorough insight to the multidimensional nature of poverty among the people. This paper examined the severity and multidimensional nature of poverty among Nigerians using the UNDP 2011Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), and found out that 85.41 percent of the people live in poor households, the intensity of poverty is as high as 43.79 percent and that 37.41 percent of Nigeria are Multi-dimensionally poor. We recommend aggressive investment in infrastructures; provision of qualitative education; provision of conducive environment for practicing of modern farming techniques which will attracts youths; adoption of a collaborative and participatory approach to fighting poverty among other things as crucial to tackling poverty in Nigeria.
