It is the first scholarly collection in the English language that is fully dedicated to Medtner's life and work. Its twelve contributions offer a variety of approaches to his biography and music, ranging from analyses and interpretive studies to hermeneutical contexts, and including many insights into his aesthetic thought. In four sections grouped by musical genre, the articles explore Medtner's solo piano music, vocal music, and piano concertos, as well as general aspects of his personal relationships and teaching. Among the authors are scholars and musicians from a variety of countries, applying concepts from Eastern and Western musicology, music theory, and performance studies-just as musical traditions of the East and West are simultaneously represented in Medtner's music.Die Veröffentlichung der vorliegenden Anthologie fällt in das 70. Todesjahr des russischen Komponisten und Pianisten Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951). Es handelt sich um den ersten wissenschaftlichen Sammelband in englischer Sprache, der vollständig Medtners Leben und Schaffen gewidmet ist. Die zwölf Beiträge bieten eine Vielzahl von Zugängen zu seiner Biographie und seinen Werken: Analysen und Interpretationsstudien werden verbunden mit hermeneutischen Kontexten und Einblicken in sein ästhetisches Denken. In vier nach musikalischen Gattungen gegliederten Sektionen werden Medtners Solo-Klaviermusik, Vokalmusik und Klavierkonzerte untersucht sowie Perspektiven auf seine persönlichen Beziehungen und seine Lehrtätigkeit entwickelt. Die Autorinnen und Autoren sind ForscherInnen und MusikerInnen acht verschiedener Nationalitäten, die in ihre Texte Ansätze der östlichen und westlichen Musikwissenschaft, Musiktheorie und Interpretationsforschung einbringen, ebenso wie musikalische Traditionen des Westens und Ostens gleichermaßen in Medtners Musik repräsentiert sind.
