Historiador social, ensayista y dramaturgo estadounidense, profesor de ciencias políticas en la Universidad de Boston y presidente del Departamento de Historia y Ciencias Sociales en Spellman College en Atlanta. Con la idea de luchar contra el fascismo se alistó para luchar en la Segunda Guerra Mundial pero sus experiencias allí fueron decisivas en su posterior postura antibelicista. Sus planteamientos incorporaron ideas procedentes del marxismo, el anarquismo y el socialismo. Desde la década de 1960, fue un referente de los derechos civiles y el movimiento antibélico en los Estados Unidos. Es el autor de más de 20 libros, incluyendo A People¿s History of the United States (editada en español como La otra historia de los Estados Unidos) y Declarations of Independence. Estudió Historia y Ciencias Políticas en el Spelman College de Atlanta y en la Universidad de Boston (Boston University), donde fue profesor emérito. Igualmente ha destacado en teatro. Su obra teatral en torno a la vida de Emma Goldman ha sido estrenada en Boston, Nueva York, Bilbao y Tokyo. Fue a su vez un notable colaborador de Z Communications.
