Born in Osaka, Hotta Ayumi traveled to Mongolia after high school to study the Mongolian language. She obtained her Ph.D. from the Department of Regional Studies at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies' School of Cultural and Social Studies. Her research focuses on how Mongolian nomads negotiate for information on material objects.
