A number of oral controlled release systems have been developed to improve the delivery of drugs to the systemic circulation. Rapid gastro intestinal transit will prevent complete drug release leading to diminished activity. Gastro retentive drug deliveries are designed to prolong and delay the gastric emptying time (GET). GET, the most important asset which helps the dosage form to reside in the stomach for longer time than convectional dosage form. Retention of oral dosage form in the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) causes prolonged contact time of drug with GI mucosa, leading to higher bioavailability. Drugs which are having shorter half lives, the drugs which are eliminated quickly, and the drugs which are incompletely absorbed from the small intestine are the suitable drug candidates for formulating them into gastro retentive systems.
