One of the great love stories of World War Two, this book is a window into Britain's secret wartime past. This is the first novel in the "None Stood Taller" series. Two people united by the war but separated by the social divide that stands between them; Lily is from the East End of London, Edward is the Earl of Middlebourne. They work together within SOE where their contribution towards the D-Day landings is enormous. However great their achievement, the chasm between them remains. Can Edward take that giant stride, will Lily declare her love? All the while, the war dictates their future. The story takes place between March 1941 and D-Day in 1944. The second book in the series entitled "None Stood Taller The Final Year" begins on the day after D-Day and follows their lives until VE Day in 1945. Lily's journey begins beneath the rubble of the London Blitz of 1941. Reduced to the ragged clothes she stands in, her unbreakable spirit propels her on a journey. That journey leads to the very top of the British wartime establishment, and to Edward. On the way she makes lifelong friends including her fellow Land Army girl, 'Dotty'. The third novel in the series "None Stood Taller The Price of Freedom" covers Dotty's life and loves throughout the same period, 1941 and 1945. Lily's story is inspired by real people and events, in particular a group of women who contributed so much towards Britain's wartime intelligence and the SOE. Thirty-nine brave women served in Occupied France as SOE agents during World War Two. People like Vera Atkins who set up and ran Section F of the SOE, and Joan Bright, who ran the secret intelligence centre in the Cabinet War Rooms under Winston Churchill. The SOE operations in my books may be fictitious, but the details are grounded in reality, as lived through by those thirty-nine brave and intelligent women. Viewed through Lily's eyes, the historic details of World War Two come to life in a way you haven't experienced before. Don't just read about wartime Britain - experience it at first hand!
Autorenporträt
Peter Turnham describes himself as an accidental novelist. As a semi-retired businessman, his life was very active, until a snapped Achilles' tendon confined him to a chair for several months. Unable to be active, Peter turned to writing and discovered a hidden talent. The result was his first novel "Autumn Daffodils - Charlie's Story". This was quickly followed by a second novel, "Autumn Daffodils - Joanna's Story".His third novel was historical fiction, a gripping story set during WWII entitled "None Stood Taller". The narrative covers the period from March 1941, during the Blitz in London, and ends on D-Day, 6th June 1944. It has proved to be extremely popular and readers approve of the immense amount of research involved about SOE to ensure the factual details are accurate, albeit the book is still fiction. This book was short-listed for the UK 2022 Selfies Award, an annual award aimed directly at self-publishing authors. The follow-on novel opens on the day after D Day and is entitled "None Stood Taller, The Final Year", taking Lily, Edward and all their Station M colleagues through exciting and troubling times to VE Day. Readers say they can't wait to move on to this continuation of the story covering Lily's life and loves during the war years!Peter has now published the third in the series entitled "None Stood Taller The Price of Freedom" which has the main character as Dotty, Lily's best friend. As we know from the previous two novels in the series, Dotty eventually joins the Special Operations Executive to the surprise of all her friends, but now we find out that she becomes a reluctant hero with very special talents which prove to be of use to her SOE colleagues. Although a work of fiction, this book continues the author's intention to weave realistic stories around actual historical facts; once again, this novel is deeply rooted in accurate historic detail which Peter greatly enjoyed researching. The contribution that the SOE made during WW2 is brought to life through the story of Dotty; Peter has dedicated this book to those thirty-nine brave women who served in Occupied France as SOE field agents during WW2, many of whom sadly never came home again.Peter lives in the English Cotswold hills with his wife and collaborator Carol. They have three adult children and four young grandchildren. They operate a holiday cottage, as well as fishing interests. Peter is involved with a range of activities as varied as fly fishing and cabinet making. He is also interested in many aspects of science, including the environment and climate change. Of all his many interests, writing has now become his number one passion; further novels will follow.
