It is the largest publicly funded historically black college (HBCU) in the state of North Carolina. NC A&T is a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and classified as a High Research Activity University by The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Founded in 1891 and known then as The Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race, NC A&T as of September 2008[update] enrolls 10,345 students from across the U.S. and is the largest HBCU in North Carolina.
