North Malabar is the erstwhile Kolathu Nadu. Kolathu Nadu comprised Thulunadu, Chirakkal and Kadathanadu. During the British Raj the area except Mahé was under Madras State. After independence of India the area became part of Kerala State except Mahé, which became a Sub-Division of Pondicherry. The area of North Malabar begins at Korapuzha in the south and ends at Manjeswaram in the north. The area now falls under four districts of Kerala i.e whole Kasaragode and Kannur districts, Vadakara Taluk of Kozhikode district and Mananthavady Taluk of Waynad district and the entire Mahé Sub-Division of Pondicherry State. The culture and geography of this area have many distinctions from rest of Kerala. The major festival of Hindus in this region is Vishu instead of Onam which is the major festival of Hindus in rest of Kerala. Unlike rest of Kerala the Hindu religion people of this region cooks and eat non-veg food during these festivals.
