The Northeast Region ("Nordeste") of Brazil is composed of the following states: Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia, and it represents 18.26% of the Brazilian territory.The Northeast Region has about 53.6 million people, which represents 28% of the total number in the whole country. Most of the population lives in the urban area, although, about 15 million people lives in the sertão. It's famous in Brazil for its hot weather, beautiful beaches, rich culture (unique folklore, music, cuisine, literature), Carnival and St. John's festivities, the sertão and being the birthplace of the country.
