SMART, AGILE, HEADSTRONG... American Hattie is a woman born into privilege in bilingual New Orleans in 1914 who strains at the conventional prejudices against women in early 20th century United States. She studies medicine at the Sorbonne in Paris, completing her degree as Hitler's Nazis invade France. Hattie fears she will die, so writes her Louisiana fiance and breaks their engagement. With little hope and forced to fend for herself, Hattie accepts a marriage proposal from a former beau now an officer in the French Army, as her only way out of Paris. She learns to love her husband, Luke DeValcourt, then loses him to a Nazi prison. Hattie joins the French Resistance to help rescue Luke, then they escape across the Channel to England Trouble that she can't see takes her to an emotional brink. Hattie believes she'll prevail, but she has a lot to learn...if she lives. It helps that she is more tomboy than debutante, with a trained intellect that helps her keep her balance. Bellamy Gayle began her writing career as a sports stringer for a local newspaper in Cajun country. A monthly column in a regional woman's magazine followed. Other work afforded a wide variety of writing experiences, from politics to a development director for a nonprofit organization, with stops in real estate and owning travel agencies back in the day. A member of the local Writers' Guild, Bellamy studied the basics of novel writing and met many gifted writers. Bellamy's stacks of short stories grew until NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) nudged her to write a murder mystery which became the first novel of the Sazerac Series. The second book, AN ORDINARY WOMAN, is in the editing phase. A third novel, tentatively titled ODETTE: RUN FOR YOUR LIFE shall follow. Gayle and her husband live in south Louisiana's Lafayette parish, happily listening to the summer sounds of the cicadas and visiting with the neighborhood cats Baby, Bob, and Blackie, who regularly drop by. The couple has a passel of grown children and a swarm of precious grandchildren scattered across the nation.
