In continuation of the Convance Primate Symposium Series, the 16th Covance Primate Symposium took place in Münster during June 2006. The 2006 Primate Symposium focussed on "Novel Approaches towards Primate Toxicology". Specifically, expert speakers provided detailed insight into new imaging technologies, (neuro)behavoiural testing and developmental (immuno)toxicology. A fourth topic dealt with challenging techniques/studies, e.g. inhalation, multifocal ERG, body composition analysis. It is anticipated that the use of nunhuman primate models in preclinical drug development continues to increase. This development is driven by the increased recognition of the specific advantages of nonhuman primate models, the ever-growing spectrum of techniques and methodologies available for nonhuman primates an dthe development of biologics. The latter is considered to exert a particular influence on future demands for nonhuman primates because of the inherent species-specificity of these new drugs.
