Dr. Marty Epstein, the author, became interested in math education when one of her children struggled in a math class in school. Although she was able to support both children when they encountered hiccups in their k-12 math education (one son went on to major in math in college and the other majored in physics), she worried other children might not be so fortunate. After translating her Harvard MBA and MS in psychology (Penn State) into a career in survey research and data analysis, Marty became so interested in how young children learn math and what can derail them that she earned a PhD in Math Education and is published in the field. She would like nothing more than to share what she's learned through crafting math books for budding mathematicians.

Marty became concerned about math education when her own children struggled in math at top public schools. Although able to help her sons, and they have gone on to major in math and physics in college, she realized most children who run into such hiccups would not be so fortunate. Marty started tutoring and substitute teaching in math and was distressed to find key math building blocks missing among so many children. This led to the "aha" realization that this issue is pervasive, forever altering the future of millions of children. SMILING DOG MATH books are her way of helping by establishing and strengthening critical math building blocks in a fun, effective way-through amusing stories, silly characters, strategic use of rhyme, coloring, and plenty of practice. Marty graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Williams College where she studied economics and psychology. She excelled in statistics en route to getting a master's degree at the Pennsylvania State University with a perfect 4.0 GPA, and she also has an MBA with honors from Harvard.
