John Young is a retired Unitarian Universalist minister and professor. He grew up in Kansas, earned a BA at Wichita State University, completed his doctoral coursework in political science at Washington University in St. Louis, and received his Doctorate of Ministry degree from Meadville/Lombard Seminary at the University of Chicago. In mid-career, he was also a Harvard Fellow.John served churches in Chicago; New York City; Bloomington, Indiana; Paramus, New Jersey; Sacramento, California; and Jacksonville, Florida. He was also an adjunct professor at the University of North Florida where he taught courses in nonviolence, the religions of India, the truth and reconciliation process (with Archbishop Desmond Tutu), liberal religion, and combining activism with personal spiritual practices.John has been an active advocate for civil rights, disarmament, mental health, LGBTQ rights, anti-poverty and anti-racism issues, and eliminating homelessness. He has served as president: of the U.S. Chapter of International Association for Religious Freedom and the UU-UN Office, was chair of the UU Society of San Francisco's social justice council, and presently serves on the U.S. chapter board and the international Council of IARF. In 2009, he retired to San Francisco. John is married to Kathleen Moran, a retired editor and technical writer. John and Kathleen hike, bike, play piano, and savor the Bay Area's cultural offerings.
