Though he was raised in a suburb of Milwaukee, Kevin Honeck was born and spent his first seven years in the lake community of Okauchee Wisconsin. For a youngster it was a time and place of mystery and adventure. At five, Kevin and his friend, Sam, left kindergarten, ostensibly to go fishing. Their leaving became permanent. Shortly thereafter, their teacher, an attractive young woman in her mid-twenties, took her own life. As unlikely as it was that the boys leaving her classroom had anything to do with her death, it nonetheless had a lasting effect on the young Mister Honeck's life. A superior athlete, Kevin had little use for academics. He attributes the foundation of his education to the Sisters of Notre Dame. A later teacher, accomplished in letters would tell him if he wanted to write he must read incessantly. For many years after he would read nothing but established classics. O'Neill's Land was his first foray into the novel.
