Martinez attended Bakersfield College, where he was selected the Western State Conference Player of the Year in 1999. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round of the 1999 MLB Draft and began his professional career with Gulf Coast Orioles. In 2000, with the Bluefield Orioles he hit .387 and was selected as the Appalachian League Player of the Year and 1st team All-Star Catcher for both the Appalachian League and the overall rookie leagues. His career continued with the Frederick Keys in 2001, the Delmarva Shorebirds and Bowie Baysox in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and his last stop in the Orioles system, the "AAA" Ottawa Lynx in 2005. After his early promise, his minor league numbers never took off and the Orioles released him after the season. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 2006 and played with their minor league affiliates in Lynchburg and Altoona.
