This special issue discusses ways of applying the concept of "knowledge circulation" in historical scholarship. The history of knowledge understands "knowledge circulation" as a multidirectional process in which knowledge is produced, mobilized, and transformed. This approach makes it possible to shed light on various actors, spaces, means, and techniques that constitute the process of knowledge production. Examining the contents, conditions, functions, as well as obstacles of knowledge in motion, uncovers contested agencies and asymmetrical power relations in knowledge production. By including a variety of definitions and methodological approaches, the volume showcases ways of identifying practices of representation and recognition, as well as strategies of empowerment and agency, if knowledge production is understood as a communicative process of action. Contributions covering various epochs and regional contexts allow for a focus on conceptual synergies in order to display theanalytical value of "knowledge circulation". Dieser Themenband diskutiert die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen, das Konzept der "Wissenszirkulation" in der Geschichtswissenschaft anzuwenden. Die Wissensgeschichte versteht "Wissenszirkulation" als einen mehrdimensionalen Prozess, in dem Wissen zirkulär produziert, mobilisiert und transformiert wird. Der Ansatz ermöglicht, eine Vielfalt von Akteur_innen, Arenen, Mitteln und Techniken sichtbar zu machen, die den Prozess der Wissensproduktion bestimmen. Werden die Bedingungen, Funktionen und Hindernisse von Wissen in Bewegung untersucht, so lassen sich umkämpfte Handlungsräume und asymmetrische Machtverhältnisse erkennen. Unter Einbeziehung verschiedener Definitionen und methodischer Ansätze fragt der Band, inwiefern es gelingen kann, neben hegemonialen Praktiken der Repräsentation und Anerkennung auch Ermächtigungsstrategien und Handlungsfähigkeiten auszumachen, wenn Wissensproduktion als kommunikativer (Aus-)Handlungsprozess gefasst wird.Beiträge aus verschiedenen Epochen und Räumen erlauben es, den Fokus auf konzeptionelle Synergien zu richten, um das analytische Potential eines zirkulär verstandenen Prozesses der Wissensproduktion, -vermittlung und -verbreitung zu erkunden.
