Autorenporträt
Author and historian Samuel Adams Drake (1833-1905) was born and educated in Boston. At the start of the Civil War, Drake became Adjutant General of the Northern Division and Captain of the State Militia in Kansas, where he was then living as a journalist. He rose to the rank of Brigadier General of Militia in 1863 and in 1864 was Colonel of the 17th Kansas Volunteers. After the war, he returned to New England, where he wrote articles for Harpers about New England landmarks and history. He authored a number of books, among them ""Old Boston Taverns,"" ""The Heart of the White Mountains,"" and ""Nooks and Corners of the New England Coast.""
