This book argues that alternative aesthetics to realism have always existed in Chinese cinema throughout its history, from the early silent era to the new century. These alternative aesthetics are closely linked to the indigenous Chinese ontology of cinema, namely shadowplay (yingxi).

Ting Luo is the Assistant Professor of Film, Television, and New Media Studies and Research Fellow at the Center for Digital Communication Studies, Zhejiang University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Auckland. Her research interests include Chinese film, Asian cinema, and media studies.
