Christopher O'Riley begins the long walk home after spending two years in a prisoner of war camp. He fought on the losing effort for the Confederacy. The war along with the stay in Camp Melton a Union prisoner of war camp has made him bitter. He will survive with his sanity but not his faith. He is bitter and confused with the God he was taught by the Nun in the orphanage he grew up in. His travels take him on an adventure where he meets Hanna, a lonly widow woman raising two children. He learns from her love and slowly finds redemption.
