From the moment of his birth and through to middle age, Richard Greene seeks to understand his place and yearns to love and be loved. A child during World War II, Richard is intimidated and bewildered by the world around him, and he journeys through life continually perplexed by his parents and family, friends and peers, work and marriage. His is a pensive existence filled with much confusion and emptiness. As a little boy watching sandcastles crumble and then a young man befriending an outcast at boarding school, Richard comes of age eager to succeed and have others think well of him despite his awkward and unsettled nature. As a grown man, he struggles to create a happy marriage and raise his two daughters with honor. But it's not until he has a disturbing vision during his midlife and encounters a mysterious woman with great wisdom that Richard is able to make better sense of his life and what's to come. An adventurous spirit with a mundane life, Richard craves something to live for-and just might muster the courage to find it.
