In India, use of different parts of several herbs to cure specific ailments has been in vogue from ancient times. The indigenous system of medicine namely Ayurveda, apart from India is prevalent in Korea, China, Singapore, West Asia and many other countries. India is a vast country where wide variation in climate, soil, altitude and latitude is available. Nature has bestowed on us a very rich botanical wealth and a large number of diverse types of herbs which grow wild in different parts of the country. Our knowledge of herbs has mostly been inherited traditionally. Use of herbs for curing various ailments is not confined to only doctors but is known to several households as well. There were many interesting and sometimes astonishing things to learn from the collectors of medicinal herbs. Spreading and preserving this knowledge on herbs and their uses have become important for human existence. There is a growing tendency all over the world to shift from synthetic to natural basedproducts including herbs.
