HIV infection is a global issue. The topic of HIV associated periodontal disease provokes some interesting and diverse interchanges with regard to the extent to which periodontal status is altered by HIV infection. Hence the discussion above suggests the various diagnostic markers and standardization of study design followed by adequate consideration of confounding variables resulting from periodontal therapy and its variation, in the biology of subject population and many risk factors involved in periodontal disease.Occurrence of oral lesions in HIV- infected patients could be a useful indicator in determining a depletion of immunological status of HIV infected patients. Rapid detection of HIV infection is of great importance as it reduces patient's morbidity and decreases risk of transmission of virus to other patients. The dentist being responsible for the oral cavity must have adequate knowledge about different oral lesions that indicate HIV infection.
