Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) have an increased risk of developing into oral cancer. Several varieties are recognized. Some of them are solitary lesions, whereas others, referred to as conditions, are multifocal or widespread within the oral cavity. Leukoplakia is the most common OPMD encountered in clinical practice. In patients with a clinically evident oral mucosal lesion that is suspected to be an OPMD, clinicians should perform a biopsy of the lesion or provide immediate referral to a specialist.
