This work examines how committed the railway professionals are in a situation where the coming market liberalisation is creating high challenges for improving the performance of the Hungarian State Railways Group. Theoretical findings were presented about topics of employee commitment, motivation, monitoring, change management and performance of state-owned companies compared to private firms. Four analyses were prepared in order to check the operative and financial performance of the Hungarian MÁV Group compared with domestic and foreign railway undertakings. The internal factors which have negative impact on the Company's performance were discussed with analysing the employees' commitment, work attitude, applied motivational techniques, as well as leaders' professional abilities to deal with workers and use the available resources intelligently to reach the long-term strategic objectives of enhancing the quality of railway services in an ever-changing work environment where reorganisations and change of top-management boards are usual. Implications for managers and suggestions for improving the operational efficiency of the MÁV Hungarian State Railways Group were proposed.
