Ostvorpommern is a Kreis (district) in the eastern part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from east clockwise) Uecker-Randow, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Demmin and Nordvorpommern. The Hanseatic city of Greifswald is enclosed by the district, but does not belong to it. It is situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It includes the western parts of the island of Usedom, with the exception of the city of Swinoujscie (German Swinemünde), which belongs to Poland. Usedom is the second largest German island, the largest being Rügen; its total area is 445 km2 (172 sq mi), the area within Germany is 373 km2 (144 sq mi), within Poland 72 km2 (28 sq mi).
