Out of Darkness delves into the continuous history of the turbulence within Russian leadership which has more recently resulted into the unprovoked attack and destruction of Ukraine, once a part of the Soviet Union, and has been independent since the end of the Cold War. In describing the plight of Russia, Chris Adams, once again, relies upon his extensive professional background and experiences in developing this story. He also features his reliable fictional character, Sasha Katsanov, a highly treained and skilled Soviet trained spy. The son of a former Soviet general, Sasha is greatly influenced by his sceptical mother. The story witnesses development of Sasha's own self-doubts, vision and eventual participation in the ultimate implosion of the once Soviet Empire and end of the Cold War. While the story does not venture into the now, 30-year later ongoing move by the present Russian leader in his attempt to reestablish his once beloved Soviet Union by bringing Ukraine back into the fold at all costs, including total destruction if necessary. It takes the reader back to the intensity of the life-threatening conflicts that pervaded the world during the Cold War and now as we are witnessing being revived by an arrogant leader product of that period. Actual locations, places and events are portrayed as they might have actually been during the height of the Cold War. As with Adams' previous novels, the tale is rich with culture, human interactions, anxiety, mystery and intrigue culminating in a complex story and astonishing conclusion. The author alludes to the fact that many of episodes are based on similar events that actually took place during the Cold War.
