The trouble with life is that you never know where it's going to take you. Society sketches out the road map and you digress from it at your peril. I didn't mean to stray, never meant to buck the system. I just wanted to be me. But those who were closest to me didn't seem to want that. Something had to give. I couldn't go on trying to please other people in the hope that I would win their love. It was as though I was lost in Tolkein's metaphorical Mirkwood - the dark forest that featured in Peter Jackson's Hobbit movies. The trees were twisted and their sap was foul. Woodland animals had been replaced by bats and giant spiders. It was a gloomy and dangerous place and I was lost in it. At times it felt like I'd been in Mirkwood my entire life. When I opened my eyes, I saw that I had a choice. Love or freedom? Compromise or confrontation? That's when I decided to go backpacking around the South Island of New Zealand in search of a freedom I had never known.
