Wechselwind
Der kleine Pablo wird bei Wechselwind in einem Babyplanschbecken an den Strand der Insel Isla getrieben. Mit im Planschbecken sitzt auch das Papagei-Weibchen Birdy, das nicht sprechen kann, flugunfähig ist und ihn seither begleitet. Den Zeitpunkt der Ankunft auf der Insel nennt Pablo seinen „Nicht-Geburtstag“. Er wächst bei seinem Ziehvater Emmanuel auf. Zehn Jahre später, wieder an seinem „Nicht-Geburtstag“, kommen Anzeichen für einen neuen Wechselwind. Diesmal weht er nicht zu Isla hin, sondern von der Insel weg. Auf einmal benimmt auch Birdy sich ganz komisch. Sie macht sogar Flugversuche. Außerdem kommen aus dem Nichts Stimmen, die weder Pablo noch Birdy gehören. Manchmal brüllen Männer, dann flüstert eine Frau auf Spanisch: „Pablo. Pobrecito Pablo“ – Pablo, armer kleiner Pablo. Ist das die Stimme seiner Mutter? Ist Birdy einer der berühmten Seefahrerpapageien, die jeden Ton der Welt wiederholen können? Zusammen mit seinem Ziehvater Emmanuel versucht Pablo, etwas über Birdy und seine eigene Vergangenheit herauszufinden. Nun taucht auch noch die Papageienjägerin Elmira Toledo auf. Sie sucht Seefahrerpapageien und ist Birdy auf der Spur. Pablo ist hin- und hergerissen: Er will, dass Birdy bei ihm bleibt, und gleichzeitig hat er Angst, dass die Vogeljägerin seinen Papagei fängt. Wird er Birdy fliegen lassen?
Jeder auf Isla kennt den Spruch der Seefahrer: „Der Wechselwind der Wechselwind, er kommt und bringt, er kommt und nimmt.“ Seefahrerpapageien lassen sich vom Wind treiben. Pablo spürt, dass er Birdy fliegen lassen muss. Das Buch ist gut geschrieben. Das Geschehen wirkt so real, dass man sich in jede Person hineinversetzen kann. Es ist so, als steht man daneben und kann zuschauen. Es gibt witzige, aber auch traurige Stellen. Manchmal wusste man nicht, ob Pablo sich gerade etwas ausdenkt, oder ob es tatsächlich passiert ist. So zieht die Autorin Alison McGhee ihre Leser hinein in Pablos Welt.
