If you suffer from chronic pain--and 51 million Americans do--there may be some relief in sight, based on the experience of this 92-year-old, former aerospace engineer, former sports photojournalist, now artist and author. Years of debilitating pain sent Jerry Norton to Mayo Clinic's Pain Rehabilitation Center four years ago. He came out three weeks later with a pain relief therapy as effective as any pain-killing drug, but without dangerous side-effects. And with a near-zero price tag! What he discovered during his time at Mayo was something familiar to any child--the grade-school task of coloring. During a coloring exercise, Norton felt none of his ever-present pain! After exchanging crayons for paint and a paint brush and had the same result--no pain. The relief that painting provided, kept him in front of his easel for hours at a time. With no significant training, and with vision in just one eye, he has become a copy artist with a gallery of more than 500 paintings, many of which populate his recent books. Said one Jacksonville neurologist and neurosurgeon, "A minor miracle is in store for some readers of this wonderful story."
Autorenporträt
Three months past his 92nd birthday, Jerry Norton has enjoyed a wide-ranging professional career. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, and a Columbia University graduate, he spent forty years developing sophisticated airborne radar systems for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. After retiring as Grumman Melbourne Systems' Director of Engineering, he embarked on a second 25-year career as a sports photojournalist. Along the way, he found time to write nine books and coach thousands of kids in football, baseball, softball, and Special Olympic wheelchair tennis. He is recognized as youth sports' greatest ambassador. Four years ago, as therapy for chronic pain, he took up oil painting and, despite vision in only one eye, used his skills as an author/artist to create his "...from my palette" series of picture books. In 1995, Jerry received the Chamber of Commerce Local Hero Award. In 2015 the Ponte Vedra Athletic Association honored him as Man of the Year, and in 2022, Jerry received the Art of Giving Award from the First Coast Cultural Center, an award given to an individual committed to sustaining arts and cultural programs within the Florida Beaches community.
