The Parachute Regiment is the Airborne Infantry element of the British Army. It is an elite unit by virtue of its stringent selection process, rigorous training programme and by the requirement of its role to operate with minimal or no support behind enemy lines and against numerically superior forces. It forms the parachute infantry element of 16 Air Assault Brigade. The regiment is formed of three regular and one reserve battalions. One battalion, the 1st Battalion, is permanently attached to Director Special Forces in the Special Forces Support Group.
