The founder of PRM, Ahmad Boestamam, was an activist of the leftist Kesatuan Melayu Muda (KMM) movement. During the Japanese occupation of Malaya, he had briefly served as with the Japanese sponsored militia known as the Pembela Tanah Ayer (English: Defender of the Homeland; PETA) and later helped to organise co-operative communes run by the KMM.
