1894. Passages from Holy Writ Chosen and Arranged for Family Reading, the Reading of Children and for Use in Schools. To the Reader: The beginning of this little labor of love was an endeavor, some years ago, to mark out beforehand the most suitable passages in some of the books of the Old Testament for reading in a large family, where there was considerable disparity in age and maturity of thought. In extending the design of the work to the books of the New Testament, the importance of presenting, as supreme, the teachings of our Savior as they are appreciated and applied by the help of the Holy Spirit, has led to giving them the first place in order of arrangement; that so it might contribute toward implanting in the minds of even the youngest the belief that His words and life are set before us as guides in our thought and actions and as our standard of attainment; and also as the standard and test by which, with the Holy Spirit's help, we are to regard all other parts of the Bible as to how far they are applicable to us as our direction, or example, or prohibition.
