Pathological Myopia is a major cause of severe vision loss worldwide. The mechanisms for vision loss include cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and above all, degeneration of the macula within the posterior staphyloma. Pathological Myopia is one of the only current books to specifically address this disease and discusses recent developments in imaging technologies and various approaches to treatments, such as laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy, pharmaco-therapeutic injections in the vitreous, and surgery.
Complete with high-quality color images, this book is written and edited by leaders in the field and is geared towards ophthalmologists, including residents and fellows in training, glaucoma and cataract specialists, and vitreoretinal macula experts.
Dr. Richard F. Spaide, MD has made many discoveries in the field of vitreoretinal diseases including myopia, macular degeneration, and intraocular inflammation. He has spearheaded development of multiple forms of retinal imaging. He has 250 peer reviewed publications, 8 books, is on the Editorial Board of multiple journals and is the Associate Editor of the Journal RETINA. He has won numerous awards including the Award of Merit from the Retina Society, the Henkind and the Richard and Linda Rosenthal Foundation awards, and the Prix Soubrane de la Recherche en Ophthalmologie. Kyoko Ohno-Matsui is a chief of the High Myopia Clinic at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, which is by far the largest clinic specializing in Pathologic Myopia. She is also an associate professor at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. She has published more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals and is currently the Editor-in-chief of International Ophthalmology. Dr. Lawrence Yannuzzi is a professor of clinical ophthalmology at Columbia University Medical School, vice-chairman and director of The Retinal Research Center of the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, and founder and president of The Macula Foundation, Inc. He is a world renowned retinal specialist who has published more than 300 scientific papers and 11 textbooks, with particular interest in diseases of the macula, such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Rezensionen
From the reviews:
"This book presents the definition, epidemiology, and genetics of myopia and an analysis of the human eye shape and pathologies and possible therapies for pathological myopia. ... Intended for ophthalmologists, the book is written in such a way that both comprehensive ophthalmologists and retina specialists may find it useful. ... This is a wonderful fount of information on myopia and pathological myopia. It is likely the most complete book on the topic currently available." (Elizabeth C. Chiang, Doody's Book Reviews, May, 2014)
