In the last one hundred years, many population movements and intensive migration flows occurred on the territory of Macedonia. These have caused continuous demographic changes within the country that are effective still today. On a general level, this study aims to include the most important events in the history of Macedonian migration from the last years of the Ottoman rule to the present day, in order to investigate whether causes, experiences and choices made have remained the same through a period of time during which Macedonia experienced different political systems. Besides identifying and exploring the migration phenomenon in Macedonian, this study tries to discover if patterns of migration of the different ethnic groups resemble the ethnic segregation present in Macedonian Society. It, therefore, includes a case study of Macedonian and Albanian migration during the transition period until today, exploring possible differences of their migration patterns. This work shouldbe especially useful for scholars and students who are analyzing the migration problem, identity and ethnicity issues or anyone else interested in the Balkan studies in general.
