Skoropadsky became a conservative leader in Ukraine''s unsuccessful struggle for independence following the Russian Revolution of 1917. He was born in a family of Skoropadskie, the Ukrainian military leaders and statesmen, that distinguished themselves since the XVII century when Fedir Skoropadsky heroically participated in the Battle of Zhovti Vody.
