Since the transition from OAU to AU, Africans have taken laudable measures towards creating a comprehensive system to manage their own conflicts. One of such measures is the establishment of an organ called Peace and Security Council of the African Union that closely simulates the UN Security Council. The establishment of this organ has created some sort of anxiety as it has become unclear whether it is meant to take over or a mere supplement to the primacy conferred up on the UN Security Council for the maintenance of international peace and security. Though the issue is one of the major spot that needs critical reflection, it has attracted little attention in the academic sphere so far and this work is an attempt to fill such gap. Furthermore, with the aim to resolve the issue, the genesis of the Peace and Security Council, relevant legal instruments of the AU and practical cases are critically analyzed. It is not doubtful that students, researchers and policy makers who are working on the Peace and Security Council will get immense benefit from this work.
