This study seeks toidentify the set of factors that influences howpeople respond to abrupt environmental disturbancesand resource scarcity through changes in livelihoodand resource management practices in two riverinecommunities of the Peruvian Amazon. The resultsreveal that socioeconomic characteristics such asforest knowledge and access to agricultural landexplain striking differences among households inlivelihood responses to environmental change,particularly concerning resource use behavior,resilience to disturbance, and the propensity toadopt more sustainable resource managementstrategies. This book should be especially useful toresearchers, NGOs, policy makers, and communityleaders working towards - or anyone else concernedabout - poverty alleviation and sustainable resourceuse in tropical humid environments.
