The Pembina Territory was a section of land covering part of the northern United States. It covered modern Minnesota and the Dakotas. It was formerly part of British Rupert's Land (controlled by the Hudson's Bay Company) from 1670 to 1818, when the Treaty of 1818 transferred the Red River valley of North Dakota (about one quarter of the present-day state) from the British to the United States and placed the boundary on the 49th parallel. The area became Pembina Territory. Later in 1830 it was incorporated into the Minnesota and Dakota territories.
