Maryam Mafi nació y creció en Irán. Estudió Sociología y Literatura en la Universidad de Tufts (EE.UU.) en 1977. Mientras cursaba un máster en Comunicaciones Internacionales en la universidad de Georgetown y en American University, comenzó a traducir literatura persa, y ha seguido haciéndolo desde entonces. Vive en Londres.
