Thermal ablation has become an integral part of oncology, especially in the field of interventional oncology. This very comprehensive book encompasses the different technologies employed in thermal ablation, its indications and the results achieved in various clinical conditions. The first part of the book clearly explains the basics of thermal ablative techniques such as laser-induced thermotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, cryotherapy, and localized tumor therapy. In the main part of the book, techniques of guiding the applicators to the target structures by use of different imaging tools are discussed. The results are presented for a variety of clinical indications, including liver and lung tumors and metastases and some rather rare conditions involving the kidney, the head and neck, the prostate, and soft tissue structures. A large number of acknowledged experts have contributed to the book, which benefits from a lucid structure and excellent images.

From the reviews:
"'Percutaneous Tumor Ablation' is a new volume in the series Medical Radiology: Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Oncology published by Springer Verlag. The book aims to help radiologists improve their skills in percutaneous image guided ablation techniques. ... The illustrative material is in general excellent, with well chosen examples of treatment efficacy. ... Overall this book provides a useful resource and will probably be used mostly as a starting point for finding out more about individual treatment techniques." (Dr Gail ter Haar, RAD Magazine, October, 2008)
"Dr Thomas Vogl and a group of authors, principally from Germany, have banded together to produce a useful book that reviews a wide variety of ... techniques not only for the treatment of hepatic tumors, but also for many benign and malignant lesions throughout the body. ... We have no difficulty recommending this readable and interesting volume to those involved in percutaneous ablation therapies. ... Radiology fellows who are training in tumor ablation techniques will find this volume particularly helpful." (Peter L. Munk and Gerald M. Legiehn, Radiology, Vol. 254 (1), January, 2010)
