Based on an exploratory study of Senegalese SMEs, five modes of performance monitoring according to the axes of the Kaplan and Norton (1992) balanced scorecard are identified. The study also shows that the monitoring method varies according to the size, capital structure, age of the firm, sector, type and level of training of managers, and the presence of an internal management controller and accountant.
