This book makes an attempt to explore some of the aspects of structure, conduct and performance of primary cooperatives dealing with credit in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh. There is a multiplicity of factors associated with these characteristics of credit societies and it is rather difficult to analyze all the aspects. Hence, a selective approach is made touching upon the most important aspects. Naturally some subjective element creeps into such an analysis. However, a constant endeavor is made to maintain objectivity in the collection, analysis, interpretation and understanding of the different elements covered in the present empirical study. Studies on cooperation in any economy proceed on the assumption of a harmony of interests and not a clash of interests obtaining in the economy. Hence, I have proceeded throughout on that assumption. Under the regime of development planning a series of positive measures are being undertaken by the State to alleviate poverty and bringabout a measure of social justice to the weaker sections of rural society. Target oriented approach is evolved for membership drive and deployment of credit.
