Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is an important segment of Indian economy by creating more employment opportunities compare to other sectors during the last five decades. These industries have distinct advantages of low capital intensity, high potential for employment generation, decentralization of industrial base and dispersal of industries to rural areas. The growth of MSMEs remains an important tool to resolve the problems of poverty and unemployment. Their significance of further lies in the fact that they account for about 45 per cent of the total manufacturing output, 8 per cent contribution of the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and 40 per cent of the total exports in the country. The sector generates employment opportunity for about 59 million people in over 26 million units throughout the country. Further, it has registered consistent a higher growth rate than the rest of the industrial sector. There are over 6000 products running from traditional to high tech items which are being manufactured by the Indian MSMEs. It contributes saving the precious foreign exchange through production of a large number of import substitute items has been equally significant.
